Once we've received your details we'll begin our 5-step research process, which will provide you with a fair and accurate valuation. Please allow 3-5 days for us to complete this research. We'll then send you an email containing our valuation for your personalised number plate.
When valuing your plate, we'll aim to optimise the balance between a satisfactory financial return for you, and a realistic chance of sale. There are no costs, fees or contracts when you advertise and/or sell your plate with us.
When you receive your valuation, you'll be asked to confirm the addition of your plate to our free For Sale listings. With your plate listed for sale, we'll get in touch when an interested party responds. With your approval, and only with your approval, the plate can then be sold. There is no charge for selling a plate through us, as the fee is paid by the buyer.
You won't encounter any untoward surprises.
We don't finalise a transaction without your approval.
No account required. We don't make you jump through hoops.
There's no downside to listing your plate with us.
Absolutely Not. NetPlates uses personal data strictly for the purpose it was provided to fulfil. The request form above does have an opt-in tick box for news and offers, to which you can subscribe if (and only if) you tick the box. We never sell data to third parties, so if you do subscribe, you will only ever receive news and offers about us, and from us. If you choose not to tick that box, you will solely receive communication that relates to your valuation and/or the sale of your number plate. For example, if an interested party requests to buy or makes an offer on your plate, we'll contact you to let you know.
We charge a commission to the purchaser of your plate.
A member of our team will contact you to let you know an offer has been made, and how much you would receive. It's totally up to you whether or not you accept. If you reject the offer, the plate will remain available at its previously agreed price - until you instruct us otherwise.
Yes, no problem at all. You may want to reduce your price for a quicker sale, or increase it if you perceive that the market for your reg is more bouyant. To change your price you'll need to get in touch with us, either by email via our Contact Page, or if you prefer, by phone on 0121 777 6444 (9am to 5pm Monday to Friday). Simply let us know your new price, and we'll update the ad for you.
You're totally in control. You can withdraw your plate from sale at any time by contacting us, either by email via our Contact Page, or if you prefer, by phone on 0121 777 6444 (9am to 5pm Monday to Friday). We'll promptly withdraw your plate from sale. But it's worth remembering that no sale could progress without your full approval, and we'd need your documentation at the moment of transfer. So even if you did leave the ad live, there's no way that the plate could actually sell unless you gave the word.
The time it takes to sell a plate varies widely, due to a range of factors. However, we have the ability to make your plate searchable to a high volume of people, and we also specialise in certain sectors of the market, which brings us interest from groups of buyers who may not visit other resellers.
We have more FAQ's for sellers of private number plates. You can find them below. But remember, if you still need help, you can Contact us and our team of experts will be happy to oblige.
You can visit our Sell a Plate page to enter your details to receive a valuation. Once you have received your valuation, you can accept it via email and we will begin advertising on your behalf.
When we receive interest in your registration, we will contact you with the offer that was put forward (if any) and request proof of ownership (this will be either the V778/ V750 Retention Document or the V5C Log Book if it is on a vehicle). We require proof of ownership before we can take any form of payment from the interested party.
We will then go back to the interested party and confirm availability. If they wish to proceed, we will contact you to confirm the sale of your registration and request that you send your documents in the post to our address Net Plates, Unit E, The Swallows Industrial Estate, 267 Cranmore Blvd, Shirley, Solihull B90 4QT. We also ask that you send your bank details so we can issue payment quickly and efficiently once everything is completed.
Upon receipt of the documents in the post, we will send the documents to the DVLA to be processed. When we receive the documents back from the DVLA, we will issue your payment.
You must retain the registration before you sell the vehicle as if you do not retain the registration you will lose ownership. This can be completed through the DVLA for a fee of £80, retaining the registration can be completed online or via post. Once the registration is retained, a new (V5C) Log Book will be issued for the vehicle, and you will receive a (V778/V750) Retention Document which you can then use to assign your registration to your new vehicle or if you are looking to sell the registration you will also use the V778 document.
Yes, we are happy to retain or assign a registration on your behalf free of charge. There is a DVLA fee of £80 which you will have to pay however we would not charge for this service. We can send all the documents to the DVLA on your behalf.
All that we require are the relevant documents to ensure that we can complete the transfer seamlessly.
The transfer can take 7-10 working days as we have to wait to receive both the buyer's and seller’s paperwork. This time frame is subject to the transfer being done online. In most cases, we must send the paperwork off to the DVLA to complete the transfer, and this can take up to 21 working days. We endeavour to complete transfers as soon as possible and we will keep you informed throughout the whole process.
The vehicle should be taxed before sending any documents to us if the tax is due to expire. For a transfer to take place, the receiving vehicle must have a valid MOT and Tax.

The short answer is that it depends on how soon interest is expressed, and on how you wish to proceed at that point. You retain total control over any potential sale presented to you, and you'll never encounter any pressure. It's your plate, and they're your decisions.
One of the great benefits of selling through NetPlates is the safe and hassle-free way in which we process the sale. We handle the transfer on your behalf, without charge (provided you don't require us to remove the registration from the vehicle for you). And both parties are assured of a safe transaction, because we effectively operate an escrow service at the point of sale.
Interestingly, there are people who approach us solely for this escrow element of our service. They've already found a buyer elsewhere, but due to the lack of trust on one side, another, or both, they're not able to sell the plate without a trusted handler in the middle.
We have a great, communicative team, who will guide you through the process once a sale is ready to go ahead. You won't be left wondering what's going on. We're an online business, but behind the scenes, we're a tradtional office with traditional customer service values. Thousands of online reviews highlight the quality of our industry-leading service when customers need it most.
Yes. We have an express, priority service, which provides valuations within 24 hours, at a cost of £25 plus VAT. Please bear in mind that we're only able to operate this service within our office hours of 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. So if it's, say, a Friday evening, your request wouldn't be picked up until Monday. To use the premium valuation service, please click here, and hit send on the email that pops up. We'll send you a payment link ASAP, and once we've received payment, we'll process your valuation within 24 hours.
No problem. We ask that you let us know as soon as the plate becomes unavailable for sale. We'll remove it from the system for you as soon as we can. During office hours, the easiest way to inform us of any changes, is via our live, on-site chat facility. The live chat is human-staffed between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday, and we can normally action your requirement without the need for any further contact on your part.
Certainly. You may want to reduce your price for a quicker sale. To change your price, simply let us know your new price, and we'll update the ad for you. The quickest way to do this during office hours is either via our human-staffed, on-site live chat facility, or by phone on 0121 777 6444.
No. With NetPlates, you don't have an account. There's therefore no need to go through an account setup process, manage a login, or look after a password. We use a more tradtional system of communication, which we believe people prefer. We'll get in touch as soon as there's any news relating to the plate you're advertising. All you need to do is approve or decline the deal. If you can see your plate advertised in our search results, but you haven't heard from us in a while, it's not because we've forgotten about you. It's because there hasn't been any interest expressed in the reg so far. Rest assured that we'll be in touch the moment an interested party comes forward.

Only if you ticked the tickbox that says "Subscribe for latest news and offers" when you completed the request form. The Valuation and Sell-a-Plate services in themselves are restricted to strictly necessary communication. Which means that unless you specifically opt into marketing, the only communication you'll ever get will relate to potential buyers of the plate(s) you're selling. And of course, even if you do subscribe to news and offers, we operate very sparingly. We're all about quality. Not quantity.
In exceptional circumstances it can take a long time for a valuation to be processed and emailed out. But if it's been over two weeks since you requested your valuation, we ask that you let us know, so we can check your request is properly queued in our system. The best way to do this is through our website's live chat facility, which is available and human-staffed between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday. You can get an almost immediate response, and if anything has gone awry we'll get things straight back on track. Much of our valuations and sell-a-plate system is manual. We get real experts to assess your plate. We don't have a dodgy robot doing rough estimates. Our manual system relies on more than one department, so if there are any untoward hold-ups, please don't think that's just how it goes. We honestly do expect to provide everyone with as much of the service as they need, so be sure to let us know if you haven't received any contact at all more than two weeks after requesting your valuation.
Have you tried searching for similar plates to your own, to gain a preliminary idea of what its value might be? In some cases this will give you a rough ballpark for the value. However, some plates can have very different (and often much higher) values, because they contain letter conbinations with high significance, or lucky numbers from different cultures around the world. As a quick example, you might find that D12 XXX would have a much higher value than D21 XXX - even though the two plates look very similar. This is because the "12" in "D12" is interpeted as a letter "R", so "D12" symbolises DR, or Doctor. Unlike "D21" plates, "D12" plates are highly saleable to doctors.
