FAQs for Sellers

How can I sell my plate?

You can click here to enter your details to receive a valuation. Once you have received your valuation, you can accept it via email and we will begin advertising on your behalf.

When we receive interest in your registration, we will contact you with the offer that was put forward (if any) and request proof of ownership (this will be either the V778/ V750 Retention Document or the V5C Log Book if it is on a vehicle). We require proof of ownership before we can take any form of payment from the interested party.

We will then go back to the interested party and confirm availability. If they wish to proceed, we will contact you to confirm the sale of your registration and request that you send your documents in the post to our address Net Plates, Unit E, The Swallows Industrial Estate, 267 Cranmore Blvd, Shirley, Solihull B90 4QT. We also ask that you send your bank details so we can issue payment quickly and efficiently once everything is completed.

Upon receipt of the documents in the post, we will send the documents to the DVLA to be processed. When we receive the documents back from the DVLA, we will issue your payment.

I want to sell my vehicle, but I have a private plate on it, how do I take it off?

You must retain the registration before you sell the vehicle as if you do not retain the registration you will lose ownership. This can be completed through the DVLA for a fee of £80, retaining the registration can be completed online or via post. Once the registration is retained, a new (V5C) Log Book will be issued for the vehicle, and you will receive a (V778/V750) Retention Document which you can then use to assign your registration to your new vehicle or if you are looking to sell the registration you will also use the V778 document.

Can NetPlates transfer my registration between cars for me?

Yes, we are happy to retain or assign a registration on your behalf free of charge. There is a DVLA fee of £80 which you will have to pay however we would not charge for this service. We can send all the documents to the DVLA on your behalf.

All that we require are the relevant documents to ensure that we can complete the transfer seamlessly.

How long does it take for the transfer of my registration?

The transfer can take 7-10 working days as we have to wait to receive both the buyer's and seller’s paperwork. This time frame is subject to the transfer being done online. In most cases, we must send the paperwork off to the DVLA to complete the transfer, and this can take up to 21 working days. We endeavour to complete transfers as soon as possible and we will keep you informed throughout the whole process.

What happens if I need to renew my vehicle tax, but my transfer is being processed?

The vehicle should be taxed before sending any documents to us if the tax is due to expire. For a transfer to take place, the receiving vehicle must have a valid MOT and Tax.

How long does it take to sell a registration?

It is difficult to set a time frame on how long it takes to sell a registration as a registration could be popular for a range of reasons such as a name, initials, a date, or the style of the registration. We maximise the chances of your registration selling by advertising on our website and sharing our list of available registrations with other number plate dealers which also increases the exposure of your registration.

What happens when my registration is sold, and taken off my vehicle?

Once the DVLA have retained the registration from your vehicle, they will send you a new Log Book (V5C) in the post which will have your new registration on it. This will allow you to get new physical plates made. You will also need to let your insurance company know that your vehicle registration has changed, after changing the physical plates on your vehicle.

Can I advertise my registration whilst it is still on my vehicle?

Once the DVLA have retained the registration from your vehicle, they will send you a new Log Book (V5C) in the post which will have your new registration on it. This will allow you to get new physical plates made. You will also need to let your insurance company know that your vehicle registration has changed, after changing the physical plates on your vehicle.

When will I receive payment once you have sold my registration?

Once a sale has been confirmed, we will need the physical paperwork to be sent into the office. Once we have received the paperwork, we will send it off to the DVLA to confirm all of the paperwork is in order and for it to be processed. We usually receive the paperwork back within 21 working days and issue payment within 24 hours of receiving the documents back from the DVLA.

If your registration was on a vehicle, you will receive your new Log Book from the DVLA a few days before we receive our documents.

What if I decide I no longer want to sell my registration?

Let us know as soon as possible by either emailing us at admin@netplates.co.uk or calling us on 0121 777 6444 and we can remove your registration from our system.

Do you charge commission?

Commission is charged to the buyer of the registration so any figure discussed with yourself will always be a NET return to you.
